Community and Service
is one of five Areas of Interaction which are central to the
Middle Years Programme. Community and Service differ from the
other areas in that it extends beyond the classroom into the
real world. In order to complete the Community and Service portion
of the MYP, students will need to become actively involved in
their community. The aim of this involvement is to help young
people develop an awareness and concern for their community,
a sense of responsibility, and skills that will aid them in
making effective contributions to society. The school is a central
part of the community. Students may participate in a school
activity or school/community sport.
OBJECTIVE
Choithram International (CI) is dedicated to make students
aware of society. The IB mission statement stresses that the
students should develop a personal value system that guides
their own lives as thoughtful and active members of local a
nd global communities. In our school there is an appropriate
provision for students to interact with society. Students are
encouraged to make connections between their academic and social
development and the benefits that they can bring to the community.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
Community and services is an integral part of the programme,
present in the curriculum as well as in whole-school activities.
A variety of techniques are used in our school to encourage
pupils to engage actively and creatively. They are given subject
specific assessment tasks, activities and educational visits.
Students are encouraged:
- To get involved in school’s cultural program as a volunteer.
- To help peers by understanding their problems and help
them.
- To support in keeping school and surrounding clean.
- To be aware of specific issues, recognize their responsibilities
and become empowered to act in response to needs identified
in class within the curriculum.
Our teachers make an effort to integrate community and services
with their subject content and consider community and service
student learning expectations in terms of:
- Community awareness and understanding
- Reflection
- Involvement through services
